National Reconciliation Week runs annually from 27 May – 3 June and is a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared histories, and on the contributions and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. These dates mark two milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey: The 1967 referendum and the historic Mabo decision, respectively.
In 2017, we reflect on two significant anniversaries in Australia’s reconciliation journey – 50 years since the 1967 referendum, and 25 years since the historic Mabo decision.
The theme for the 2017 National Reconciliation Week is ‘Let’s Take the Next Steps’. As we commemorate these significant milestones all Australians are asked to be a part of the next big steps in our nation’s reconciliation journey.
Reconciliation Australia has partnered with cultural institutions across Canberra to deliver a week-long program of special events, including public activities, exhibitions, displays, lectures, tours, films and stories about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures.
