Marking the 100 year anniversary of the armistice that ended the First World War, the Australian War Memorial will run a five week program of events from 8 October to 11 November 2018 commemorating this significant date which will include an installation of 62,000 knitted poppies and an exhibition that focuses on the aftermath of major conflicts.
The ACT Government has announced an investment of $150,000 to support the program of activities through its Major Event Fund to support this significant historical event.
The program of commemorations is expected to draw significant interstate and international visitation with Canberra’s Australian War Memorial the focal point of Australia’s commemorations.
The Remembrance Day commemorations were flagged by Lonely Planet as an event not to miss in its Best in Travel 2018 guide that ranked Canberra third in its list of Top 10 cities to visit.
The ACT Government continues to work towards its goal of growing the ACT’s overnight visitor expenditure to $2.5 billion by 2020.
