Canberra was voted third best city in the world to visit in last year’s Lonely Planet Guide. This year the Canberra region was mentioned in the Lonely Planet’s publication Wine Trails: Australia and New Zealand.
Canberra is the first destination for readers to taste, with Lonely Planet saying the region is ‘one of the nation’s youngest but what it lacks in maturity, or geographical cohesion, it makes up for in exuberance and a willingness to experiment’. It’s home to ‘killer shiraz and crisp floral riesling’ and let’s not quibble about the fact that most of the region’s wineries are actually across the border in NSW, from Murrumbateman to Lake George.”
Wineries mentioned in the article include Clonakilla, Mt Majura Vineyard, Helm Wines and Four Winds Vineyard. Poachers Pantry & Wily Trout Vineyard and Lerida Estate also get a mention. In the Lonely Planet where to stay and eat section, there is Ovolo and Little National as well as eateries, Eightysix, Akiba and the Cupping Room.
